This kavvanah was written in preparation for a class I taught for the Green Sabbath Project, “Follow the Goat: using the scapegoat ritual in creating new kavvanot / sacred intentions for lighting Shabbat candles.”

קַבָּלִי בְּאַהֲבָה וּבְחֶמְלָה נֵרוֹת שַׁבָּת אֵלֶּה. קַבְּלִי אֶת הָאֵשׁ שֶׁאֲנִי מַעֲלָה כְּעוֹלֶה וְאֶת מִלּוֹת תְּפִלָּתִי כְּמִנְחָה. |
Accept my Shabbat candles with love and compassion. Accept my fire as a burnt offering and my words as tribute. |
שְׁמָרֵי עַל מִשְׁפַּחְתִּי בְּתוֹךְ הֲמֻלַּת הַיּוֹם יוֹם, שְׁמָרֵי עַל [הוסף: יַלְדֵי וְעַל אִישִׁי / אִשְׁתִּי], שֶׁלֹּא תֹּאבַד דַּרְכֵּנוּ וְנֵדַע לְהַבְדִּיל בֵּין עֲבוֹדָה לְעַבְדוּת. שֶׁנֵּדַע לִשְׁמֹט. |
Protect my family in our daily tumult guard my [add: children and husband / wife / beloved] so we don’t lose our way between work and slavery. So we know how to let go. |

Guard the sea, the great forests, protect each and every place with your mercy. Help us remember there is no place empty of your Awful holiness, but many places are empty of our sanctity, as is their preference. |
